Summary

  • Added new term UBERON:7770001 'inner cortex of thyroid cartilage'
  • Added new term UBERON:7770002 'outer cortex of thyroid cartilage'
  • Both terms are part_of thyroid cartilage (UBERON:0001738)
  • Inner cortex is less mineralized with more chondrocytes and proteoglycans for flexibility
  • Outer cortex has denser hyaline cartilage with higher collagen matrix density for structural rigidity
  • Used references provided in issue Add terms for Inner & outer cortex of thyroid cartilage #3535

This PR addresses issue #3535 and should close related issues #3459 and #3460.

@dragon-ai-agent

Added two new terms as requested in issue #3535:
- UBERON:7770001 inner cortex of thyroid cartilage
- UBERON:7770002 outer cortex of thyroid cartilage

Both terms are part_of thyroid cartilage (UBERON:0001738)

@dragon-ai-agent please update the definitions. They are almost perfect, but it would be better if each term definition explicitly references the other in comparative statements. e.g. "The inner region of the thyroid cartilage characterized by less mineralized tissue" --> "The inner region of the thyroid cartilage characterized by less mineralized tissue than the outer region

Having looked more carefully at the sources, I am not convinced they support the assertions. I am researching further.

Please, see inline comments. I couldn't find the majority of information from the definitions in the provided references

From the kenhub page referenced:

The internal surface of the thyroid cartilage is covered by a mucous membrane. The angle serves as the attachment point for several laryngeal ligaments and muscles such as the thyroepiglottic, vestibular and vocal ligaments as well as the thyroarytenoid, thyroepiglottic and vocalis muscles.

  • We can add the exact synonym 'internal surface of thyroid cartilage' (also in PMID:30855790)
  • It lists more muscles and ligaments that are suported by this structure.

I can't see all the information in the references:

This page doesn't make reference to this structure (it describes thyroid cartilage as a whole)

In the kenhub page there is an exact synonym: external surface of thyroid cartilage

Agreed. Apologies for rushing this one and the extra work for you. Came from a quick Perplexity search using their default model.

I now think it might be easier to just define in terms of the different functions/connections of each side, which do not seem controversial.
