non-intuitive cursor behavior for selection completion

The way the interface triggers a refresh by waiting until the cursor moves out of the dropdown selection frame is very counter-intuituve and takes forever to figure out. I think I only figured it out because Bob told me. For a long time (months), I thought it was a kind of time-out thing - that after a while of not typing, a completion was triggered.
