why everything duplicated between master and gh-pages

It seems that all documentation and data are duplicated between the master and the gh-pages branches. Is there a reason to that? Obviously, the danger is someone inevitably will forget to apply a correction in both places.

Feel free to remove the duplicated cruft, it's there by mistake (or really, it's what happens when you make the gh-pages branch and then don't clean up).
